>> Compaq has also registered gains in channel satisfaction, making the gap between it and HP significantly narrower. CRN analysis finds this a remarkable turnaround from just six months ago, when HP held a solid lead over Compaq.

The March channel satisfaction index stood at 28.3 percent, up from 23.3 percent in February but still below the recent high of 30.7 percent in January. The index is measured as the average of the percentage of solution providers expressing satisfaction with channel programs minus the percentage expressing dissatisfaction for 11 major hardware vendors. The higher the figure, the higher the overall level of satisfaction.

Most vendors saw an increase in channel satisfaction. Cisco Systems saw its overall satisfaction index jump to 46 percent in March from 34 percent in February. Not shown here is Intel's index figure, which rose to 50 percent from 45 percent and indicated the highest overall level of satisfaction among the 11 vendors CRN regularly surveys.

Hewlett-Packard was a conspicuous exception to this trend, with its satisfaction index dropping 3 percentage points in March to its lowest level in almost a year.
