IDC: 3Q Intel-based Server Shipments, Spending To Rise In United States

Intel-based server shipments into the United States are expected to reach about 413,000 units, up about 17 percent from the 353,000 units shipped in the third quarter of last year, said Steve Josselyn, research director for IDC's enterprise server fundamentals program.

The value of those servers is expected to hit about $2.1 billion, up over 10 percent compared to Intel-based server revenue of $1.9 billion last year, he said.

Volume growth is expected to be higher than revenue growth as more businesses, including SMBs, purchase smaller one- and two-way servers, Josselyn said.

"For these difficult times, people are buying incremental capacity," he said. "They're buying what they need. They're not spending as much on big-ticket items. They spent too much in 2000 and 2001."

Worldwide, revenue for Intel-based servers is expected to hit about $5 billion, up 4.7 percent compared with last year, Josselyn said.

In the second quarter of this year, about 39 percent of worldwide shipments of Intel-based servers were rack-mount units, Josselyn said. About 15 percent of all Intel-based servers went into Linux environments, compared with 68 percent that went into Windows environments. For the third quarter, Josselyn said he expects the rack-mount server and Linux server markets to grow faster than the server market in general.
