Verizon, Gateway Team Up For Mobile Wireless Service

Gateway, which unveiled the deal at the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association's Fall conference here, plans to offer its business customers access to e-mail, PIM and back-end data access. The company said it intends to offer a complete package, including service, installation, integration, security and equipment.

Service will run over Verizon's CMDA 1xRTT wireless network, which runs at approximately 40 Kbps to 60 Kbps, with peaks up to 144 Kbps.

Gateway's service is available this week in Las Vegas and the Dallas and Houston areas, the company said. The vendor plans to bring additional markets online this year and expects to offer complete nationwide coverage by mid-2003.

Gateway is the latest hardware company to offer a wireless e-mail solution to its customers. Hewlett-Packard and IBM have both teamed up with wireless service aggregator GoAmerica to offer similar services.
