The two companies will use BEA's WebLogic Workshop and proprietary technology from RIM's Blackberry mobile devices to deliver the solution.

"The creation of this framework is intended to enable ISVs and enterprise customers to easily develop mobile applications and allow carriers to offer new services for Blackberry users," said David Yach, vice president of software for RIM, Waterloo, Ontario, in a statement.

The two companies could not provide an anticipated completion date for the project, a BEA spokeswoman said.

Web services provide a way for applications written in different languages and running on different platforms to interact with one another. As more enterprises deploy mobile devices in their IT structure, companies are working to support Web services for mobile applications. Microsoft, for example, recently released Windows CE .Net technologies to ensure that portable devices using its operating systems can interact within a .Net framework.

From its work with RIM, BEA hopes to see applications that can integrate information into a number of different sources. The BEA spokeswoman said its Web services tools could be used to provide credit ratings, current order status and driving directions to client locations accessible from an application on a RIM device.
