Intel, AMD Up Quarterly Sales Projections

Executives of Intel, Santa Clara, Calif., late Thursday were scheduled to explain their increased projections in a conference call with Wall Street analysts.

However, in a statement, the company said sales were better than expected for the quarter, particularly in Asia, and would lead to sales of between $6.8 billion and $7 billion for the quarter. Previously, Intel executives said they expected sales of between $6.5 billion and $6.9 billion for the period.

AMD, Sunnyvale, Calif., likewise said it would report higher-than-expected sales. The company said it expected sales "to approach" $700 million for the quarter. That would mark a gain of 35 percent from the third quarter, when the company previously said it expected a gain of 20 percent.

AMD pointed to stronger-than-expected sales in the PC processor space as a key reason for the upgrade.
