Novell Completes SilverStream Acquisition, Formally Enters Web Services Market

Novell SilverStream

The deal, which was announced June 10, gives the Provo, Utah, software company Web services development capabilities to supplement its existing networking and directory services software. SilverStream's J2EE environment and XML technology were of particular interest to Novell, which hopes to become a leading player in the Web services market with its identity management and eDirectory software.

As a result of the merger, SilverStream is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Novell. David Litwack, formerly president and CEO of SilverStream, becomes senior vice president of Novell and a member of Novell's Worldwide Management Committee.

SilverStream's eXtend development environment will be integrated into Novell's product line and used by Novell developers including consultants from its Cambridge Technology Partners subsidiary as well as channel partners to build, deploy and manage Web services-oriented applications based on Java, XML and Web services standards, company officials noted.

However, SilverStream will continue to run its own channel program separately from that of Novell for the time being, said Nancy Reynolds, vice president of North American channel sales for Novell, in a recent interview. "SilverStream has their own partner program," Reynolds said. "We've had talks and [will take the best of their world, but their resellers and partners are very different. Their target audience is the developer community."
