The rebate is being offered on the device, regularly priced at $399, with a one-year wireless service agreement, a spokeswoman confirmed Friday.

The i705 runs on the Palm-branded wireless network that runs over Cingular Wireless' Mobitex network. The $34.99 Executive Unlimited Wireless Plan is required to receive the discount.

The grayscale device, which includes an integrated wireless radio and 8 Mbytes of RAM, was originally released in January at a price of about $449.

The Palm spokeswoman said the following products also are being discounted: the m105 drops 34 percent to $99, the m125 drops 15 percent to $169, and the m130 drops 11 percent to $249.

Tom Teates, CEO of Pen Computer Solutions, Las Vegas, said Palm, as usual, has been tight-lipped about upcoming handheld products. But he said lowering the price of competing models is the best signal he has for an impending release.

Palm officials have said publicly that the first hardware based on OS 5 will ship this fall.
