Microsoft's newly-shipping SQL Server Service Pack 3 rolls up all the fixes previously released with Service Packs 1 and 2 as well as security enhancements, the company said Monday.

"Serviceability" improvements including automatic error reporting to Microsoft are also highlighted. This is the first time that the company's Dr. Watson technology, already available in Windows and Office, has been incorporated in its database.

The pack also sports better multi-server administration, and a new monitoring API that lets database administrators or third party administration tools diagnose problem processes, the company said. Service Pack 2 shipped in November, 2001.

CRN reported last October that Microsoft was putting the final touches on a beta version of SP 3, with hopes of shipping the full service pack by year's end. (See story.)

The pack also updates Books Online, a guide to making the database environment more secure.

In related news, Microsoft is working on the next major release of SQL Server, which sources say it hopes to have in the hands of beta customers by this spring and show off at the official Windows Server 2003 launch on April 24. And, it is also working on the 64-bit version of SQL Server 2000, code-named Liberty, to debut this spring. (See story.)

Solution Providers can now download Service Pack 3 from the Microsoft web site.
