IBM is taking the next step on its road map for grid computing with 10 new grid offerings in five "focus areas."
The computer giant, whose Chairman and CEO Samuel Palmisano has said on-demand computing would be a key focus of the company, said Monday it will offer grid solutions for financial markets, life sciences, automotive/aerospace and government vertical markets.
In addition, the company said it has struck deals with two grid middleware software providers--Platform Computing and DataSynapse--which it says will play major roles in rolling out grid solutions in enterprise-specific industries.
Among other things, the grid offerings will include bundles of IBM hardware, middleware and services that will include eServer pSeries and xSeries systems, IBM storage and middleware including WebSphere, DB2 and Tivoli. The company will also make the open-source, Grid-focused Globus Toolkit available to partners and developers.
Under IBM's strategy, hardware, middleware and services will be bundled and deployed in "on-demand" solutions. In those scenarios, high amounts of computing power can be installed into specific solutions, with unused CPUs and middleware capabilities being turned on and deployed when existing computing power reaches its limit. Under IBM's plan, customers would pay for only the computing power they use.
