Where To Find New IT Projects

IT industry analysts are generally optimistic that technology investing will return this year. With that in mind, VARBusiness is partnering with Wendover, a Haverford, Pa.-based business intelligence firm, to uncover upcoming IT spending strategies at leading corporations. Wendover interviews some 4,500 technology decision-makers each quarter to determine what IT initiatives they expect to embark on in the next 365 days. Here are some of the technology areas showing the greatest potential:

The services sector, including health care, education and business services, promises to be the biggest winner in the volume of new initiatives to be deployed this year.

Expansion of government IT projects is expected to occur. Estimated demand in this sector will grow approximately 20 percent from the first quarter of 2003 to the fourth, Wendover finds.

While steadying, future IT initiatives in manufacturing will continue to lag economic improvement. Demand for IT projects in manufacturing is expected to fall 16 percent between the second and fourth quarters of this year, according to the research.

As enterprises consider the payback of developing their business processes, software is expected to benefit. Company budgets are now focusing on technologies that optimize operations, so the demand for operations software is expected to double in 2003.
