Good Technologies To Support Handspring Treo

Good, the most significant competitor of Research In Motion (RIM), said version 2.0 of its software will support Palm's OS and be network-ready for next-generation CDMA and GSM networks by fall. Support for Microsoft's Pocket PC format is also in the works, the company said.

Good's software, which currently works with Cingular's Mobitex network, will now also support Cingular's Interactive Messaging Plus to provide person-to-person communication for urgent messaging needs. Version 2.0 provides optional logging of messages to meet corporate compliance requirements.

The new features are available for Good's G100, as well as the RIM 950 and RIM 957 wireless handhelds on the Cingular Network.

Good expects to add Handspring's forthcoming Treo 600 to its lineup by fall. The Treo 600 will be sold by Sprint and will run on the carrier's next-generation CDMA network, the company said.

Currently in the process of being acquired by Palm, Handspring has long been rumored to be in talks with Good. RIM has already singed agreements with Palm and Microsoft's Pocket PC group to provide support for the handheld OSes, although few devices have added the company's mobile messaging capabilities thus far.

However, solution providers have said the integration of capabilities for RIM and Good make sense for corporate handhelds. Many companies already have installed messaging servers from RIM and Good and can easily upgrade users to the more functional wireless handhelds with Palm and Pocket PC OSes, they say.
