Ingram To Launch Sarbanes-Oxley Services Initiative

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act requires financial institutions to maintain at least a five year history of electronic documents, including e-mail.

Pat Collins, senior vice president of sales at Ingram Micro, said the distributor is looking to provide services that will bring together security and storage solutions aimed at helping Ingram's VAR partners win business among regional banks and large financial institutions.

Ingram also has a practice set up around the Healthcare Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which requires health-care providers to create electronic documents so patients can access a comprehensive view of their healthcare history.

Ingram is also looking at providing initiatives around other verticals such as manufacturing, said Collins.

Collins said that Ingram has invested heavily over the last year to build the company around technology solutions for VARs. "In the past marketing and distribution was a lot about MDF (Market Development Funds) management and, yes, that is still a piece of the business from a distribution perspective, but now the company is focusing around "identifying and addressing unmet needs."

Ingram Micro President and Worldwide COO Mike Grainger said Ingram's services and vertical market focus is key to the company's strategy. He said Ingram Micro's software licensing programs provide a solid foundation to build on. "We lead the industry in that regard and are considered to have the best software licensing tools of any of the distributors," said Grainger. He said that the software business is growing faster than other Ingram businesses with strong growth in the storage and security software segments.

Ingram is also looking at the opportunity surrounding the digital home networking/entertainment market, said Collins, noting the growth opportunity is also going to be strong in the networked boardroom/conference room. "I don't see 2004 as a breakout year, but we see it as very important to keep our eye on it," he said.
