Microsoft Settles With Dakotas For $18.33 Million

The settlements with North Dakota and South Dakota mean that Microsoft will issue approximately $18.33 million worth of vouchers to class-action members in those states. These vouchers can be used to purchase desktop, laptop and tablet computers; software; and selected peripherals.

As in other settlements with states that have taken Microsoft to court over alleged unfair business practices, the two with the Dakotas also includes a provision whereby half of the unclaimed vouchers will be turned over to the states' public schools, which can use them to buy hardware or software, and pay for computer training.

In late October, Microsoft said that it had struck deals with five states and the District of Columbia worth a total of $200 million, but because not all had approved the settlements, wasn't able to lay out the dollar value of some.

The deal with the Dakotas leaves only Tennessee's dollar amount unannounced. By subtracting the value of the settlements already made public, however, Tennessee's slice of the pie will be approximately $54.5 million.
