Several printer vendors have rolled out new products over the past few days.
IBM this week introduced a new line of five monochrome workgroup printers under the Infoprint brand.
If the new printers appear to resemble the latest line from Lexmark International, there's good reason--IBM is OEMing them from Lexmark, says Paul Preo, IBM's business line manager for printers.
The five new printers, including models with print speeds ranging from 20 pages per minute (ppm) to 45 ppm, help fill out IBM's printer line, says Preo. And the OEM deal with Lexmark means faster time-to-market for the new line, he says.
The Infoprint 1120 and Infoprint 1125 offer up to 1200 dots per inch (dpi) print quality and speeds of up to 20 ppm and 25 ppm. Both are expected to be available in late October, with prices starting at $721 for the 1120 and $928 for the 1125.
The Infoprint 1130 and Infoprint 1140 outputs 1200 x 1200 dpi at print speeds of 30 ppm and 40 ppm. An optional StapleSmart finisher device allows pages to be stapled automatically. They are expected to be released late next month and priced at $1,199 for the 1130 and $1,759 for the 1140.
The Infoprint 1145 is a wide-format, 45-ppm printer with image quality of up to 1,200 dpi. Options include stapling, offset stacking, hole punching and an envelope feeder. Pricing, when it ships in late October, is expected to start at $2,992.
The IBM printers follow Lexmark's own introduction by about a week.
Like IBM, Lexmark is introducing five new monochrome models with basically the same specifications.
The T520, with 20 ppm output, will replace the company's 12-ppm M410, with the list price remaining the same at $699, says Kevin Spinks, director of U.S. marketing in Lexmark's Printing Solutions and Services Division. It also replaces the M412, a 17-ppm unit, Spinks says. The 25-ppm T522, priced at $899, will replace the older 15-ppm T610.
Two other models, the 30-ppm T620 and 40-ppm T622, are Web-ready and include Lexmark's ImageQuick card. ImageQuick allows poll printing from a printer without the use of a PC, says Spinks. For example, a form or a user manual can be assigned a URL. A user could go to the printer, find the URL as a bookmark and have the latest version of the form or manual printed, he says.
The new W820 offers 45-ppm speed and is expected to be priced at $2,899.
Lexmark also introduced four new multifunction models incorporating copying, faxing, scanning and printing functions. Two are based on the T520 and T522 printers, and the third is based on Lexmark's C720 color laser printer.
The W820, T622, T620, T522 and two of the three multifunction models are already available to solution providers. The T520 and its related multifunction model is expected to be available in mid-July.
For its part, Xerox this week introduced a new monochrome printer, the Phaser 3400. It offers 17-ppm speed and image quality of up to 1,200 dpi, and is available now with a list price of $649.
Also new from Xerox this week is the Phaser 860 color solid-ink printer. It prints up to 16 ppm and has a print quality of up to 1,200 dpi. The first page prints out in as little as 10 seconds, according to the company. The Phaser 860 is available now with a list price of $1,999.
