Digital River made a move to expand its e-business outsourcing solutions to the small and midsized enterprise market this week with the purchase of e-business services platform provider Orbit Commerce.

CEO Joel Ronning says the purchases will provide the company with new channels, as well as strong market and partnership opportunities.

Digital River purchased Orbit's assets and liabilities for just under $1 million and about 728,000 shares of its common stock.

The company plans to leverage Orbit's channel model to support its e-business services division as well as its growing list of small and midsized business sites. Digital River plans to transition up to 3,500 sites that were generated by Orbit channel partners to its e-commerce platform, substantially increasing the number of sites it hosts.

The company says it will maintain partnerships already established by Orbit, including relationships with Gateway, VeriSign, Cincinnati Bell.
