Novell To Unveil Enhanced BorderManager, Mobile Internet Offerings

At its annual Brainshare 2002 conference next week, the Provo-based company is expected to debut an enhanced version of its network security product, BorderManager, that integrates Surf Control's Internet content filtering software.

BorderManager 3.7, which will be unveiled next week, will integrate the Internet content database of Scotts Valley, Calif.-based SurfControl, sources said. Novell BorderManager is a firewall, VPN and authentication security solution that maximizes worker productivity while keeping hackers shut out, they said. SurfControl's software enables sophisticated filtering of Web content for corporate networks.

Meanwhile, Novell launched two new mobile products at CeBit 2002 in Hannover, Germany, that are based on its Zenworks and iFolder offerings for mobile and handheld use. Both will ship within the next month, the company said.

ZENworks for Handhelds 4.7, which is expected to ship on March 15, will provide centralized management for Palm, Windows CE and Pocket PC devices to reduce the cost of handheld management.

Combined with ZENworks for Desktops, the software manages and controls a company's entire mobile workforce, the company said. It is based on leading handheld management software Orbiter, acquired by Novell from Callisto Software in December. It will be available from Novell and its partners at a cost of $49 per user license for a limited time and $59 following the limited offer, the company said.

Novell also debuted an enhanced version of its iFolder Internet service--iFolder Professional Edition 2--that extends support for Web access from Windows CE and Palm OS devices. Version 2 also adds support for Linux and Sun Solaris operating systems, Novell executives said on Wednesday.

IFolder, which currently runs on Novell NetWare and Windows NT/Windows 2000, was introduced in 2001.

The iFolder Professional Edition 2 also offers improved reporting and billing features as well as enhanced scalability, the company said. The upgraded version, for instance, allows multiple Novell iFolder servers to be pooled to create a single-system image, allowing multiple servers to operate under a single domain name and support millions of users, Novell said.

Novell iFolder Professional Edition 2 will be available April 17 for $49 per user license, and service provider licensing will be available at $1.50 per user each month, the company said.
