Nortel Unveils VoIP, Multimedia Server

Nortel Networks

The Succession Communications Server for Enterprise Multimedia Xchange (CSE MX) delivers voice and multimedia applications such as videoconferencing, instant messaging and collaboration tools over the IP network, said Tony Pereira, director of product marketing at Nortel, Brampton, Ontario.

"The major benefit [solution providers will get is the ability to solve customers' application needs with [what is really a product toolkit. They can engage the customer at the business level rather than just the technical level," Pereira said.

The introduction of CSE MX marks the first time Nortel offers support for Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) within its Succession line of IP telephony products, said Pereira. The product also supports the H.323 and MGCP protocols.

The system gives end users more mobility by allowing them to reroute their incoming phone calls from the office to a home office or mobile phone, Pereira said.

"The system will try to find you," he said.

Targeted at enterprise clients, the system supports up to 200,000 users, Pereira added.

CSE MX, which runs on open servers from Sun Microsystems, also can link with devices such as gateways and PBXes from other vendors, he said.

Pricing per user is expected to run between $700 and $900. CSE MX is scheduled for general availability at the end of August.
