New Nortel Gateways Combine Router, VPN

Nortel Networks

The technology will help enterprises cut networking costs by as much as 70 percent, said Frank Plastina, president of metro and enterprise networks at Nortel.

With the new technology, businesses will be able to deliver IP services over the Internet, effectively using the Internet as the network, with the same security, reliability and manageability of leased lines, Plastina said.

Nortel's Contivity Secure IP Services Gateways are based on a new architectural model that Nortel calls Secure Routing Technology.

The architecture provides the scalability to enable more widespread delivery of secure IP services over the Internet.

The gateways consolidate routing, VPNs, firewalls, bandwidth management, Quality of Service and other IP services on a single platform, improving cost-effectiveness, Nortel said.

Nortel's secure routing technology architecture and new Contivity secure IP services gateways follow earlier introductions from Nortel, including new BayStack Ethernet switches for enterprises and the Succession Communications Server.
