Changes In HP Management On The Mobile Side Expected

A spokesman for HP said most of the iPaq executives will be staying and there will be changes in the HP organization as a result.

HP and Compaq are working to integrate the two companies under a structure formally announced at a press conference on Tuesday. At the press conference, HP President Michael Capellas said the Compaq iPaq mobile line will be called the HP iPaq moving forward.

As a result, HP plans to phase out the Jornada 500 and 560 Pocket PC devices, the HP spokesman said. The Jornada 720 clamshell product that uses Windows CE will stay but will be rebranded as an HP iPaq device, he said. Compaq will continue its iPaq lines as well as the Compaq BlackBerry, which will now be called the HP BlackBerry, according to HP.

Capellas said the decision to chose the iPaq was clearly one of market share.

"The rule was market share wins unless there is a technical reason to [use the other brand," he said. "We've taken the iPaq name and extended it more broadly, trying to put together a family of mobile products."

Moving forward, the executives supporting the mobile product line will be working in the HP Personal Systems Group, headed by Executive Vice President Duane Zitzner. Kevin Gilroy will head up channel programs for the devices.
