Sprint Set To Launch 2.5G Wireless Network

Sprint is expected to announce this week nationwide activation of its 2.5G network, based in 1xRTT technology, several solution provider sources said.

Although Sprint's launch lags behind competitors, including AT&T Wireless, which uses the competing GPRS technology, and Verizon Wireless, another CDMA 1xRTT licensee,it will have a jump on nationwide coverage if it meets its promises, Sprint partners said. AT&T Wireless and Verizon Wireless are still working to complete nationwide coverage.

Sprint did not return calls for comment.

Sprint may maintain a coverage advantage, but solution providers are unsure about some key details, including the carrier's pricing strategy, the variety of wireless data-capable devices supported at launch and the company's planned marketing efforts.

One wireless-industry executive questioned whether Sprint would meet the date, particularly because the company has not confirmed it with some scheduled launch attendees.

Other solution providers suggested any potential delay could be a result of device availability.

Handspring, Mountain View, Calif., which plans to ship a Treo device for use on the Sprint 2.5G network, is expected to deliver the product shortly after the launch, one source said. A Handspring spokeswoman declined to comment on the Sprint launch.

At least one other smart phone is expected to be unveiled at the launch, sources said.

Still, other solution providers are confident Sprint will meet the planned launch date. "I think they are not going to miss the date," one solution provider said. "The question is: What will they do from a marketing and media standpoint?"
