Novell Taps MySQL Database For Shipment With NetWare

Beta versions of MySQL for NetWare 6 are now available for testing. The final version of the database is expected to be available in December at no charge.

Novell will offer up a commercially licensed version of MySQL, meaning developers will not be held to General Public License conditions that usually pertain to open-source software. Under the GPL, any application developed with a GPL tool must be freely available for others to read, redistribute and modify. The commercial license Novell offers obviates those requirements, according to a statement from Novell and MySQL.

Uppsala, Sweden-based MySQL has managed to straddle the line between open-source databases, which are freely available via the GPL, and commercial versions of those databases that can be built into products for resale. Recently, for example, Sun Microsystems said it was bundling mySQL with Solaris on some Sun servers.
