Tech Data Adds 802.11g Products

Tech Data will carry Austin, Texas-based Buffalo Technology's AirStation G54 Broadband Router Access Point and wireless CardBus Adapter, which enable solution providers to sell and support 802.11g wireless LAN (WLAN) technology for SMB customers, said Roy Appelbaum, vice president and general manager of networking product marketing at Tech Data.

"Wireless networking is allowing resellers to provide their customers with flexible, cost-effective solutions ideal in today's business landscape," Appelbaum said in a statement.

The 802.11g technology is a current draft of a protocol developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) that is faster, carries more data and has a longer range than existing 802.11 standards, according to Tech Data. Solution providers are enthusiastic about the standard because it promises up to 54-Mbps network speeds with backward-compatibility with the popular 802.11b Wi-Fi standard. The final version of the 802.11g standard is expected to be ratified in May.

The WLAN product market is projected to grow to 23.6 million units sold in 2005, from 3.3 million in 2000, according to Cahners In-Stat/MDR.
