Proxim Unveils Economical Wireless Outdoor Solution Products

Proxim Tuesday unveiled a new family of wireless outdoor point-to-multipoint solutions aimed at, among others, businesses and schools in search of affordable campus connectivity, security and surveillance.

Tsunami MP.11 is based on Proxim's Wireless Outdoor Router Protocol (WORP), which is designed to deliver speeds up to 40 percent faster than existing outdoor router solutions. Its architecture supports 802.11b radios, and it is designed to support 802.11a and 802.11g radios in the future, according to the company.

WORP also supports Asymmetric Bandwidth Throttling, which allows adjustments to the data rate users receive and send. It also leaves room for service providers to offer differentiated services and pricing for business and residential customers, according to Proxim.

Kevin Duffy, senior vice president and general manager of Proxim's WAN Division, said Tsunami MP.11 fills a need for low-cost, reliable multipoint products enabling applications that previously would have been too costly to deploy with wireless technology.

For instance, Tsunami MP.11 should also appeal to community service providers looking to offer more affordable residential and wireless Internet access, Duffy said.

The Tsunami MP.11 product family includes two subscriber units--an Enterprise Subscriber Unit for businesses and a Residential Subscriber Unit for homes. The product family also includes the Tsunami MP.11 Base Station Unit, which can connect up to 100 Subscriber Units of either type.

The Tsunami MP.11 base station, when paired with the Enterprise Subscriber Unit, offers an 11-Mbps solution customized for businesses, campuses, schools, hospitals and other enterprises needing WAN connectivity.

Tsunami MP.11 products are slated to be available in March from Proxim's network of distributors and resellers, the company said. The Tsunami MP.11 2411 Base Station Unit has a list price of $995, Tsunami MP.11 2411 Subscriber Unit has a list price of $595 and Tsunami MP.11 2411 Residential Subscriber Unit has a list price of $395.

Details on a solution provider program for the new products were not immediately available. However, Daryl Schoolar, senior analyst at In-Stat/MDR, said Proxim's Tsunami MP.11 meets the goal of most service providers looking for a CPE with a price point of $300 or less, and also provides a migration path for future upgrades.

The Tsunami MP.11 products are aimed at providing value-oriented connectivity for customers not requiring additional carrier-class features offered by Proxim's Tsunami MP and Tsunami MP Active Interference Rejection (AIR) products, Proxim said. Tsunami MP.11 can be used in conjunction with Proxim's carrier-class Tsunami point-to-point and multipoint products that offer speeds of up to 960 Mbps total capacity for large-scale deployments, the company said.
