IBM has signed a multiyear agreement to make Nvidia's GeForce graphics processor unit, both companies said Wednesday.

The deal means Nvidia now has two companies making the GPU popular among fans of graphics-intensive computer games. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. is the current maker of the GeForce.

IBM plans to begin manufacturing the graphics processor this summer at its East Fishkill, N.Y., plant. The $2.5 billion facility opened last year and is expected to ramp up in capacity throughout 2003.

IBM makes the PowerPC processor and chips for cell phone manufacturers Qualcomm and Xilinx. Financial terms of the IBM-Nvidia deal were not disclosed.
