iAnywhere Updates SQL Anywhere Studio, Adds Mac Support

SQL Anywhere, the popular embedded database, is getting an overhaul, including new support for the Mac OS X operating system and optimization for 64-bit Itanium systems running Windows, Linux and HP-UX.

The Mac support will be announced this week at the annual Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, said Chris Kleisath, director of engineering for iAnywhere, a subsidiary of Sybase, Dublin, Calif.

A key focus of the new release is performance and scalability improvements and a new "Index Consultant" to help developers and administrators find and apply the appropriate index to speed queries.

Kleisath said the database has new optimizer capabilities and better administration tools including one to enable creation of dynamic SQL databases. Mobile synchronization has also been improved upon with new server-initiated synchronization. In the past, because many mobile devices are only occasionally connected, synchronization was typically initiated only from the mobile device. The server can now 'ping" the mobile device via SMS to prompt synchronization.

One integration and ISV partner said improved out-of-the-box .Net support is key. "We did our own .Net provider as an interim solution but this is easier," said Larry Trainer, vice president of engineering for Shelflink, a Cambridge, Mass. integrator specializing in applications for the beverage industry.

The beta software also boasts faster query performance, "which is key because we often run on limited devices," Trainer said.

The index consultant is also helpful for tuning the database for best possible performance, he said.

As previously reported by CRN SQL Anywhere Studio 9 also adds support for important web services standards

The Windows version of the new database is slated to ship in July, the Macintosh and Unix editions in the fourth quarter, Kleisath said.
