Sun Ups Processor For Four-Way Servers

The V480 is now available with two or four UltraSPARC III 1.05GHz processors, said Warren Mootrey, director of marketing for volume system products at Sun.

The V480 previously used 900MHz processors, so the upgrade gives the servers a 22 percent boost in performance, Mootrey said. The price remains the same as for the older version, he said.

With the upgrade, the entire line of Sun UltraSPARC III servers is now running the 1GHz-plus processors, said Mootrey.

The upgraded V480 is now available priced at $19,995 with two processors and 4 Gbytes of memory. About 80 percent of the V480 servers are sold through indirect channels, Mootrey said.

Sun has no plans to offer Linux on the V480 servers, said Mootrey.

The V480 servers were first introduced late June.
