Group Forms To Advance Project Management In Health-Care

A growing need for project management expertise in the health care sector, driven at least partly by increasing adoption of new technology, prompted formation of a group to promote best practices in the sector.

The PMI Healthcare Special Interest Group, St. Paul, Minn., operates under the auspices of the Project Management Institute, an organization of project management professionals.

"The demand for good project management is growing in health care. I think it's growing everywhere, but it's definitely growing in health care," said William Detienne, an IT consultant and board member.

He said the group's aim was to create a common language, structure, reusable templates for project management in health care and to promote best practices.

"People interested in learning more about project management and even some people with a little more technical background like myself are joining to get a little more rounded in the project management world," he said.

Since forming in mid-July, the group has attracted about 140 members, a spokesperson said. The organization has not yet formed local chapters, but plans to do so.
