Microsoft Exchange Gets New Boss

The Exchange e-mail group is getting a new top dog with the departure of Mohsen Al-Ghosein as vice president of Exchange Server. Dave Thompson will step into that role.

It appears that Al-Ghosein, one of a handful of Microsoft employees with a Distinguished Engineer title, is leaving the company.

One solution provider close to the group said Al-Ghosein had accomplished what he set out to do when he was tapped to take over the mail group in November 2002. He got out Titanium, or Exchange Server 2003, and "cleaned up the development group," the partner said.

Thompson joined the company in 1990 and is currently listed on the Microsoft site as corporate vice president in the Windows Server Product Group.

This change emanates from a wide-ranging reorganization announced by Microsoft Platforms Group Vice President Jim Allchin last month. The most public part of that move was the creation of a centralized engineering division called the Windows Core Operating System Division to be headed by Brian Valentine.

Another more recent change was a reshuffling of the e-business server group first reported by CRN last week.

A Microsoft spokesman confirmed that Thompson will be taking the reins of the Exchange Group shortly but was unsure whether Al-Ghosein was leaving the Microsoft realm entirely.
