Microsoft chairman Bill Gates plans to sell 1 million Microsoft shares worth $66 million, continuing a routine pattern of selling small amounts of his holdings in the software giant, his spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

Gates has made a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission to sell the shares. He has already sold 8 million shares worth about $535 million from April 30 through July 31, according to the filing.

"Bill Gates is on a regular program where he periodically sells a small fraction of his Microsoft holdings as part of prudent portfolio diversification," his spokeswoman says.

The sale of the 1 million shares "is part of that regular program," she says.

After the sale, Gates will remain Microsoft's biggest shareholder, the spokeswoman adds.

In a separate SEC filing on Tuesday, Microsoft said it plans to sell 277,162 common shares of SeaChange International, a digital video company based in Maynard, Mass. The SeaChange shares were valued at $8.1 million. Microsoft said in the filing it acquired the SeaChange stock in May 2000 as an investment.

Microsoft gained 22 cents, to close at $66.35, while SeaChange rose $1.25, to $23.86, both on the Nasdaq.
