Sun Offers New Portal For VPN Deployment

Sun ONE Portal Server 6, Secure Remote Access allows customers to deliver a "VPN on demand that can be accessed outside the corporate intranet for mobile employees," said John Fanelli, Sun's director of product marketing and management for network identity, communications and portal.

Fanelli said the portal works through Sun-patented technology called a "netlet," which is a Java applet that securely tunnels out applications beyond the firewall to users working remotely, Fanelli.

The portal user's connection never goes through a company firewall. Instead, the secure gateway acts as a proxy to allow an enterprise to make the URL accessed behind the firewall invisible, Fanelli said.

To ensure that the connection between the remote user and the enterprise is secure, the new portal allows users and administrators to configure a number of different encryption technologies, as well as other security functions, Fanelli said.

The portal will be available in mid-October with a two-CPU license for $95,000, Fanelli said. A standard version of the Sun ONE Portal Server 6 starts at $57,000 per CPU.
