Microsoft Licenses ARMTech Tool for Windows 2000 Datacenter Server Consolidation

Microsoft

On Monday, the software giant said it had licensed resource and application management software from Aurema for distribution with its highest-end Windows server, Windows 2000 Datacenter Server.

The Active Resource Management Technology (ARMTech) for Windows software, which will be used by Unisys and other systems integrators, offers improved workload management in scenarios in which multiple departments or applications need to run on a single server and resource contention becomes a factor, Microsoft said. ARMTech, for example, allocates, controls and monitors Windows resource use and implements policies to maximize server consolidation and productivity.

"Resource allocation has been a hot topic for us for a long time--we often highlighted the process control feature of the Windows 2000 Datacenter operating system for its ability, with [Unisys' ES7000, to shift resource allocation on the fly to quickly adjust for unforeseen changes in demand for an application and its data," said a spokesman for Unisys.

It will be available for download at no cost to Windows 2000 Datacenter customers and can be accessed from Microsoft and numerous Datacenter partners including Bull, Compaq Computer, Dell Computer, Fujitsu, Hitachi, IBM, NEC and Unisys.

One systems integrator said the tool will be useful.

"Microsoft's ability to consolidate numerous servers to one is greatly enhanced by the offering of ARMTech," said John Dandeneau, director of strategic alliances for ePresence. "EPresence will include ARMTech as a component of any server consolidation project where Microsoft Datacenter Server is a part of the solution."
