Intel: Server Architecture, Mobile Plans Top Agenda

\

Intel has shipped 100 million microprocessors for its channel since late 1994.

The news came as Intel produced its 100 millionth boxed microprocessor, a Pentium 4 chip, specifically for distribution through the channel. It plans to disclose that milestone today.

Unprecedented support for the channel currently reaches into the highest executive ranks at Intel, said Tom Kilroy, Intel's vice president of sales and marketing and general manager of its reseller channel operation.

"We're in a position like no time before internally," said Kilroy. "If you're not seeing a change, let us know."

Among top agenda items for 2002 disclosed during the Intel Solutions Summit here, Intel said it is evaluating how to encourage development of "white books," Intel's internal moniker for notebooks assembled by its systems integration channel, said Kilroy.

INNOVATIVE PARTNERS HONORED

Proactive Technologies' Pat Taylor (holding award) accepts Intel/CRN Best In Show kudos from Intel's Tom Kilroy (left) and Tom Lacey, and CRN's Heather Clancy.

Other priorities include better support for partners selling into government and education markets; more programs for the Intel server architecture and a heightened emphasis on vendor alliances.

Intel also honored more than a dozen channel allies last week with awards ranging from one recognizing the largest server project in Latin America to one for top sales of Intel wireless products. In addition, two innovative Intel solution providers were honored with CRN's latest Best In Show partner awards.

American CompuSystems, Orlando, Fla., was named for its pioneering work with Intel's converged communications platform in a Florida elementary school. Proactive Technologies, Carrollton, Texas, earned kudos for a storage networking solution it deployed at printing giant Quebecor.

American CompuSystems began investing more heavily in its relationship with Intel two years ago, encouraged by its local representative, said Luis Rodriguez, president and co-founder. "They are our primary vendor partner. Very rarely do any of the other companies send an actual rep to see us," he said. "We offer very personalized service to our customers; we like to be treated in the same way."

Proactive Technologies, which had revenue of $5 million last year, also praised Intel's support in business management issues. "When you have an engineering focus, you're not always good about the other things you need to do to help your company grow," said Pat Taylor, president and founding partner.

CRN's Best In Show awards are being presented in conjunction with vendors leading the way in creating cooperative partnerships with their indirect sales channels. The next awards will be presented in April. The first Best In Show recipient was AnswerThink, which was honored last month at IBM's PartnerWorld in San Francisco.
