New Tools From Palm To Simplify Wireless Development

Palm

The company on Monday unveiled its Wireless Database Access Server (WDAS), aimed at integrators and other developers creating wireless applications that access a back-end server.

The software lets developers use familiar Integrated Development Environments (IDEs), such as AppForge and Metrowerk's Code Warrior, to create mobile applications and then allow them to access back-end databases in real-time without requiring the user to manually sync to the database. Many Palm applications that access back-end databases now rely on a sync-method, where the user prompts the device to update the database.

Developers can also use the software to build applications that store data while the user is offline and then automatically transmit when a wireless network is in range.

WDAS comes with support for most enterprise databases, including Oracle, IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL Server and Sybase. The software also incorporates Certicom's encryption libraries and Secure Socket Layer.

Palm is shipping the product via AppForge and Metrowerk's Code Warrior. The software is bundled in CodeWarrior Development Tools for Palm OS, Enterprise Edition, Version 8.0, according to Palm. Pricing is approximately $1,000 via Metrowerk's Web site. The software also is downloadable from the AppForge Web site. A Palm spokeswoman declined to provide additional shipping or pricing information.

An enterprise edition that will include deployment licenses and more features will be released later this year, according to Palm executives.
