Microsoft Updates Office XP, Exchange Server

The Office XP Web Services Toolkit 2.0, now available for download, will let Office XP users better access data residing in back-office systems or remotely in third-party stores, the company said.

The updated toolkit adds support for UDDI, WSDL and SOAP 3 protocols, the company said. That means that an Office application can use the UDDI registry or the URL to a WSDL file to find and then consume pertinent XML services.

Users of the new toolkit must uninstall the previous version and have Windows Installer 2.0, the company said.

Group Vice President Jeff Raikes unveiled Office XP Web Services Toolkit 2.0 at the company's .Net briefing Wednesday. Office XP and its successor is a cornerstone of the company's newly minted "knowledge worker" or "information worker" push. See related story.

In other news, Microsoft also offered up Service Pack 3 for Exchange Server 2000. The update includes security patches to protect against vulnerabilities caused by large memory allocations. A security guide for Exchange 2000 is to be offered later this month with procedures and best practices for mail administrators, the company said.
