BEA Releases JRockit 7.0

BEA Systems

JRockit is currently available on 32-bit Xeon-processor systems and will be available on 64-bit Itanium processors soon, according to the company.

The release of JRockit 7.0 is key to BEA's strategy to provide independent J2EE middleware not tied to proprietary server systems, unlike competitors IBM and Sun Microsystems, a BEA spokesman said.

With the new JVM, WebLogic, which has more deployments on Unix-based systems, will run as well on Intel-based systems, he added.

The release of JRockit 7.0 is another step in a plan BEA laid out in July 2001 to optimize its WebLogic platform for servers running Intel processors.

The deal in part was to stave off competition in the middleware space from BEA partner Sun, on whose servers solution providers primarily deploy BEA WebLogic, observers said.

To further broaden WebLogic deployment on servers other than Sun's, BEA also struck an alliance with Hewlett-Packard in June to bundle WebLogic middleware with HP hardware systems, including both Unix- and Intel-based systems.

BEA acquired the JRockit JVM in February when it bought a Sweden-based company, Appeal Virtual Machines.
