Hard Facts: IT Spending

>> Security remains the top spending priority for enterprise firms, but lower levels of spending were the rule in most technology categories.

The CRN's Business Spending survey showed significant declines in spending priorities in many technology areas between June and September, including hardware and software as well as Internet-related categories.

The news is not entirely gloomy, however. Security remains the top spending priority at the enterprise level and has actually increased in importance over the past three months, according to the survey.

Within this category, antivirus software has the highest level of spending priority, followed closely by firewalls and intrusion detection. Even VPNs have a higher level of spending priority compared with many other product categories.

Wireless and CRM saw higher levels of spending priority in the September survey, and printers were another bright spot, in contrast to other peripheral categories such as flat-panel displays and UPSes.

While all eight of the hardware and software categories CRN regularly surveys saw declines in the level of spending priority, the magnitude of the decline was smallest in storage and network software.
