Tech Data Adds Cisco Auto-Configuration Service

The distributor is using the technology as the foundation for Advanced Integration Services for Cisco routers, switches and Call Manager Express servers. It is used to coordinate integration of memory, configuration utilities for Cisco IOS and security features, among other things.

Executives for both companies said the services should help speed delivery of related Cisco products. The services are offered by Tech Data's configuration center in Swedesboro, N.J., which is ISO 9002-certified.

Donna Turgeon, director of product marketing for networking/networking services at Tech Data, Clearwater, Fla., said the technology should enable the distributor to configure up to 500 routers per day on behalf of solution providers that have chosen to outsource this activity.

Fees for the service range from $20 for a base-level configuration on Cisco 800-1700 series routers to $250 for a complex configuration associated with a Cisco Media Convergence Server.

Carolyn Crandall, director of channel operations, U.S. channels, at Cisco, said the vendor has been refining this technology for three years. One reason Tech Data was chosen for the pilot is because it is Cisco's largest worldwide distributor, Crandall said. The deal, disclosed this week at the Cisco Partner Summit 2004 in Honolulu, is not exclusive.
