CRN Interview: Ken Lamneck, Tech Data

Ken Lamneck was named Tech Data's president of the Americas last week. The former president of Arrow/Richey Electronics spoke with Distribution Editor Scott Campbell about his plans.

CRN: How did you come to Tech Data?

\

'I wouldn't say we're looking for new types of customers. Tech Data's customer base is broad enough and strong enough.'
-- LAMNECK

Lamneck: I've known Tech Data for a while. I've been in this business 22 years. I've been on the distribution side so I've known Tech Data from that vantage point, as well as with two suppliers where Tech Data was a [distributor]. So I've known the company, the culture, the philosophies. I've been impressed with them. I'm excited about the opportunity.

CRN: How does your experience lend itself to Tech Data's business?

Lamneck: I have an understanding of distribution from the value proposition to customers as well as supplier partners. I'm going to be helping to really drive new programs through Tech Data. My background is in the operations, logistics, marketing side of the business, as well as inventory management.

CRN: Does your arrival at Tech Data indicate that the distributor may look to expand into a new product area or a new customer base similar to what you had at Arrow?

Lamneck: I wouldn't say we're looking for new types of customers. Tech Data's customer base is broad enough and strong enough. Our specialized business unit (SBU) strategy has been very successful, and it's a matter of rounding out and strengthening suppliers we may need to support some of the SBUs.

CRN: What specific areas or technologies are you looking to strengthen?

Lamneck: The whole mobility market and POS market are areas we are trying to expand on. And we have the announcement of the Digital Environments SBU [for digital integrators].

CRN: Do you plan to get to know Tech Data's solution provider customers soon?

Lamneck: For the next few weeks, I will make sure I spend time with employees and then spend time with suppliers. I will be visiting key customers as well. I'll be very field-focused when you go beyond the next few weeks.
