Snap-In Hard Drive Enables Dual Personalities

Changing a hard drive usually requires a lot of tools and a lot of time. But with Addonics Technologies' Snap-In SATA Mobile Rack, swapping hard drives takes mere seconds.

Hard drives are installed and removed just as they are in RAID arrays. The Snap-In SATA Mobile Rack is a hard-drive cage that mounts in a standard external 5.25-inch drive bay. This allows the personality of a system to be changed on the fly for different users and also allows secondary drives to be swapped depending on content. Once the hard drive is inserted, the front door can be locked to prevent theft and inadvertent removal of the drive.

The Snap-In SATA Mobile Rack is ideal for use in schools, computer training centers and in business settings that require users' disk content to remain isolated. Business users often work with confidential files, and software applications often have license agreements that are violated when multiple people can access them. Because it allows multiple users to share a system without having to share the data or operating system, those problems are solved with the Snap-In SATA Mobile Rack. For example, one hard drive can be loaded with Microsoft Windows Vista while another might contain Linux; or one drive can be loaded up with office applications while another might contain engineering software.

The Snap-In SATA Mobile Rack costs $26.95 and supports any 3.5-inch SATA hard drive, which are hot swappable. The Snap-in SATA Mobile Rack is also available with converter modules that interface with IDE, USB and SCSI. The device costs $49.95 bundled with a USB 2.0 interface, $47.95 with an IDE interface and $129.95 with an LVD160 SCSI interface.

Available with a black or beige bezel, the Snap-In SATA Mobile Rack gives solution providers the option to build systems with split personalities.
