Hungry For HD? TiVo Intros 1-TB Recording Device

TiVo is betting that HDTV users have an extra-large appetite.

The DVR company unveiled TiVo HD XL, a 1-Tbyte video recording device that can capture about 150 hours of HD programming and 1,350 hours of "basic quality" programming.

The device will retail for $599.99 and can record many more hours than the company's previous 160-GB model (TiVo sold a separate external 500-GB drive). That device—minus external drive—could capture 20 hours of HD and 180 hours of SD video and costs $299.99.

Like TiVo's other offerings, the HD XL features a dual tuner to record and watch up to two HD shows at once.

While many cable companies now offer their own DVR service using the existing cable box, TiVo HD XL includes CableCard capability that can replace the cable box. It's also digital-transition-ready, according to the company.

TiVo service continues to cost $12.95 per month, up to a lifetime service for $399.

The new HD XL device comes a day after TiVo announced it has extended its agreement with DirecTV. The two companies will jointly develop an HD DirecTV DVR featuring the TiVo service.

"We have had a very successful history with DirecTV. We look forward to launching a next-generation product that uses TiVo's latest features to truly showcase DirecTV's broad selection of high-definition programming—all stitched together with the elegance of TiVo's renowned user experience," said Tom Rogers, TiVo's CEO and president, in a statement.
