D-Link DIR-685 Wireless Router/ Photo Frame
Talk about "convergence:" D-Link's DIR-685 combines both 802.11n wireless networking with imaging technology and storage so it can act as both a Wi-Fi router and digital photo device. The photo frame itself is a 3.2-inch LCD built neatly into the device, and can also display video, weather and other live, streaming Internet content. Shown at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the D-Link DIR-685 is listed at less than $300. Availability has not been announced.
Vuzix Wrap 920AV
We don't get to review enough video eyeware products, and this is certainly one that we'd like to look at. Vuzix's Wrap 920AV is a set of video eyeware that allows for viewing movies on iPhone or iPod devices, and allows for what the company says is the rough equal to a 60-inch screen as viewed from 9 feet. In addition, Vuzix says the specs maintain a 300-degree field of view and "see-through" capability that allow for both viewing of multimedia and the ability to keep seeing what's going on in the real world around you. The projected launch for the Wrap 920AV is summer 2009.
MSI U115 Netbook
Manufacturer MSI is pitching the MSI U115 as "the world's first netbook capable of simultaneously running SSD and HDD"—to deliver both storage capacity and performance. According to MSI, the HDD will come in either 120-GB or 160-GB capacities, while the SSD is built to provide either 8 GB or 16 GB of storage. In addition, MSI says the netbook will provide both a "big-size" keyboard and touchpad, a 10-inch display and run on Intel's Atom processing platform. The MSI U115 will launch this month.
Psyko 5.1 Gaming Headphones
Psyko Audio Labs is touting the Psyko 5.1 as "The Perfect Room," owing, it says, to the capability of the headphones to provide 5.1 surround sound. The headphones are built with not just earpieces, but miniature speakers that line the headset all the way around. The company is pricing the headphones at $299, and the Psyko 5.1 will be available "in limited quantities" during the first half of 2009.
Real-View 3D Scanner
Real-View says it is delivering the first-ever low-cost 3-D desktop scanner, based on technology originally developed for use in medical cameras for non-invasive surgery. The device, which looks like a mini-treadmill, actually takes topographical, 360-degree, 3-D image captures—and the images can be exported into other, typical desktop or online applications. Pricing had not yet been set as of press time.
Sony Vaio P Series
Sony says the Vaio P Series will be "the world's lightest 8-inch notebook" at 1.4 pounds, and is also calling it a "Lifestyle PC." Built with a clamshell chassis that will come in four different colors, it will include a 60-GB hard disk drive or 128-GB solid state drive, as much as 8 hours of battery life, 802.11 a/b/g, a QWERTY keyboard and 8-inch screen with LED backlight. It will be priced at $899.99, making it among the highest-priced netbooks, when considered to be in that category, or midpriced, if it's viewed as a small notebook.
