Budgets in other industries might be stretched, but the oil industry has still got money for IT: A recent deal between CSC (VAR500 2008 rank: 4) and oil giant BHP Billiton Petroleum will cover enterprisewide infrastructure, including help desk, desktop, midrange, network, high-performance computing and telecommunications services, as well as applications management. The five-year, $53 million information technology services contract provides scalable services to BHP Billiton Petroleum and is aimed at enhancing users' IT experience.

CSC, with annual revenue of $17 billion, has provided IT support services to various organizations within Houston-based BHP Billiton for the past eight years.

"This contract award underscores the breadth and depth of our experience supporting energy industry corporations and our ability to adapt to our clients' changing business needs," said CSC Chairman, President and CEO Michael W. Laphen in a statement. "We have supported BHP Billiton for several years and adjusted our solution and client engagement model to address the company's new decentralized approach to IT."

BHP also has contracts with other VAR500 companies, including Accenture (VAR500 2008 rank: 2). Last August, Accenture captured a software outsourcing contract with BHP, edging out both incumbent CSC and Indian rival InfoSys. In September, Accenture took over the management of BHP's SAP software systems from CSC, which reports have estimated is worth roughly $50 million a year.
