HP Says Notebook Memory Problem Affects 900,000 Of Its Models

An HP spokesperson said the memory modules include 128-MByte, 256-Mbyte and 512-Mbyte units from Samsung, Infineon Technologies, Micron Technology and Winbond Electronics.

The modules cause problems when used in notebooks with certain Intel chipsets, including the 845MP, 845MZ, 852PM, 852GME and 855PM (when used with discrete graphics). The problem notebooks also have Mobile Pentium 4 or Pentium Mobile processors that support C3 power management, as well as a BIOS that allows C3, the spokesperson said.

HP estimated that 900,000 of its notebooks manufactured between March 2002 and July 2003 may be affected, the spokesperson said, adding that the problem--which is industrywide and not HP-specific--was discovered through routine testing.

HP users can go to the HP Web site and run a utility to find out if there is a problem with their notebook memory. If so, HP said it will send replacement memory along with a prepaid package for returning the old memory.
