Scribd, a document-sharing Web site, is poised to launch a mobile feature later this month that would give mobile device users access to more than 10 million documents stored on its site, according to Scribd.
Scribd bills itself as the largest social publishing company in the world, where users can instantly publish their material in the form of Web documents to share with the world. Many large book publishing firms -- Random House Publishing Group, Simon & Schuster and Harvard University Press, among them -- also publish books, chapters and other materials through Scribd, according to the company.
A new "send-to-device" feature will allow users to download reading materials to an e-reader or smartphone, including Amazon's Kindle, Barnes & Noble's Nook, Apple's iPhone and Google Android-powered devices.
Scribd also is making a series of APIs -- the Scribd Open Content Platform for E-Readers and Mobile Devices -- open to the public in case device makers want to integrate Scribd's search or social functionality.
"Scribd is in a perfect position to become the hub for mobile reading, the place where content creators come to easily publish their works and build a readership and where consumers come to find what they want to read on whatever device they want," said Trip Adler, Scribd CEO and co-founder, in a statement.
