Lenovo Targets SMBs With New Value Line Of Rack, Tower Servers

Lenovo is adding a value line of 2-processor servers as part of its Tuesday introduction of three new servers targeting the SMB market with starting prices just north of $800.

Lenovo's two new rackmount servers and a new tower server, all based on Intel's new Xeon 5500 and Xeon 5600 processors, are targeting the growing SMB market and the solution providers who serve it, said Kumar Majety, director of ThinkServer marketing for the vendor.

The new servers include remote management and hot-swap hard drives in every model except for a couple base configurations, Majety said. "Our intention is to drive innovation and value with our servers to this fast-growing segment of the market," he said.

Lenovo already offers a series of 1-processor and 2-processor servers in its ThinkServer family, Majety said. Unlike the new models introduced Tuesday, the company's previous line included room for more memory, in addition to other features that optimized them for performance, and as a result have a higher price tag, he said.

However, for SMBs, Lenovo's new value servers handle most of their requirements, Majety said.

Included in the new lineup is the ThinkServer RD230, a 1U rackmount server which can be configured with one or two Intel Xeon 5500 or Xeon 5600 processors, up to 64 GBs of memory, and up to four SAS or SATA hard drives. It includes hot-swap storage, RAID 5 data protection, and remote management.

Pricing for the ThinkServer RD230 starts at $999, including one 4-way Xeon 5500 processor and a built-in DVD writer, Majety said.

Also new is the ThinkServer RD240, which is similar to the RD230 but includes room for up to eight hard drives, as well as additional features such as RAID 6 data protection. List price with one 4-way processor starts at $1,399.

Lenovo also introduced the ThinkServer TD230, a tower server with specifications similar to the RD230, except that it has maximum memory of 32 GBs and customers can choose between a 4-bay hot-swap or a 5-bay direct-connect hard drive configuration, Majety said. Pricing starts at $829.

The new servers target the same SMB market as Hewlet-Packard's ProLiant ML 150, DL 150, and DL 180 and Dell's PowerEdge T410 and R410 servers, Majety said.

They are currently available, and can be purchased only through Lenovo's solution providers.
