Federal Integrator Apptis Acquired by URS

The Chantilly, Va.-based integrator focuses on high-end professional services to the U.S. Department of Defense and other federal agencies, and will help URS bolster its security, infrastructure, network management and cloud computing capabilities.

Apptis is majority-owned by affiliates of New Mountain Capital, and in 2010, had revenues of $298.2 million, according to the company. It has about 1,000 employees across 35 states and nine international offices.

URS, which specializes in engineering, construction and technical services, is headquartered in San Francisco and earlier this month acquired BP Barber, a civil engineering firm.

The acquisition is expected to close in about 60 days, the companies said. It does not include Iron Bow, the solution provider and reseller business that's wholly-owned as an Apptis subsidiary. Iron Bow, which was named to CRN's inaugural Tech Elite 250 list earlier this year, will operate as an independent, stand-alone company.

Randall A. Wotring, president of URS Federal Services, cited Apptis as key to helping URS grow its critical IT services offerings.

"Apptis plays an important role in helping the military combat cyber threats and in assisting federal agencies with the implementation of IT solutions that increase productivity and efficiency," Wotring said in a statement. "We are delighted to add Apptis' highly skilled team of professionals, approximately 70 percent of whom have DOD clearances, to our business."
