Intel To Delay Sonoma Launch

While not making an official announcement, the Santa Clara, Calif., company has begun telling some customers of its new plans. Intel still plans to release the processor to OEMs as scheduled, but a source said "technical and marketing factors" have caused it to push back the formal launch date.

Sonoma is slated to be a major refresh of Intel's mobile Centrino lineup. Earlier this year, executives said the new chip would ship with an Intel Pentium M processor, a 533MHz front-side bus, new Wi-Fi support for 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g and a new chipset, code-named Alviso.

The chipset is being developed to support next-generation graphics and functions such as TV-out, high-definition audio and four-port PCI Express.
