IBM CEO Study Shows IT Spending Shifting To 'New Buyers'

IBM says technology is becoming so pervasive in corporate America that IT spending is no longer limited to just CEOs or CIOs.

Big Blue's 2012 Global CEO Study, which interviewed more than 1,700 executives worldwide, shows the convergence of new technologies such as social networking and mobility is changing how IT is being purchased and used in corporate America.

Heidi Dethloff, IBM's vice president of North American business partner & midmarket marketing, spoke with CRN TV about the study and said around 80 percent of CEOs interviewed predicted their businesses would undergo major changes or make bold moves in the near future.

In addition, Dethloff said there are "new buyers" emerging in businesses today beyond the CEO and CIO; for example, chief marketing officers may be interested in things like social media and business analytics. As a result of new technologies and "new buyers," technology has become the No. 1 priority this year for CEOs, according to IBM's study.

"Technology is the No. 1 priority for them, which is the first time since we've conducted this study [that technology has been the top factor]," she said.
