Leading Business During A Time Of Change


 

Business leaders constantly hear about the evolving environment in which we work, but less often discussed is the opportunity for growth and leverage in this time. Terri Griffith, author of “The Plugged-In Manager,” talked to attendees at the Women of The Channel West conference about how to lead in a time of change through a method that does not come naturally to most people: letting go.

According to Griffith, the average 26-year-old has changed jobs seven times since they were 18 years old.

“We’re in a time of change, and how we work also needs to shift,” said Griffith.

When Griffith encourages professionals to “let go,” she does not mean lose control. What she wants people to do is to let go of “rote” notions about how a business should operate, whether that means incorporating walking meetings instead of gathering around a conference table, or abolishing set performance reviews and encouraging open dialogue with managers.

In order to be successful in today’s marketplace, business leaders need to be honest with themselves, even if that means making difficult decisions.

“Sometimes we have to let go of the organization we’re in or the group we’re in,” said Griffith. “Sometimes you just have to go and find the place where you’re appreciated.”

“All of these things depict wisdom,” Griffith said. “Wisdom about -- not reckless driving or reckless abandon -- but instead being able to make a good choice about what being able to let go of, and what to hold tight to, when we’re managing and working in this time of change.”
