Celonis Partnership With Protiviti Aims To Bring 'Process Mining' Tech To Clients

Celonis, a developer of analytics software used to identify and improve business processes, has enlisted Protiviti, a leading risk and auditing consulting firm, as a channel partner to implement, configure and customize Celonis' software for enterprise customers.

Protiviti sees the use of the Celonis software, called "process mining," as a key addition to its consulting services around business processes and design of ERP (enterprise resource planning) systems.

"This tool really helps in how we would execute that service for a client, how they can automate their business processes more effectively," said Jim Pajakowski, executive vice president of global solutions for Menlo Park, Calif.-based Protiviti.

Celonis' software collects data about IT-supported business processes within large organizations, such as a supply chain ordering system, reconstructing what happens throughout the process and creating a visual representation of those processes for analysis. That makes it possible to spot bottlenecks, inefficiencies, interventions and other problems that can slow businesses processes.

The software also helps spot areas where compliance, risk or financial governance issues might arise.

Protiviti, which works with SAP, Microsoft and Oracle, provides business process analysis, business transformation and system design services, often a precursor to implementation of ERP applications from one of those vendors. Protiviti's technology consulting practice oversees the up-front solution design, governance and program management for ERP projects and works with systems integrators who do the implementation work.

ERP implementation projects often fail due to a lack of up-front planning and business process design, Pajakowski said in an interview with CRN. And as businesses step up their digital transformation initiatives, the Celonis tools can provide the kind of visibility that's critical to making such projects work.

The Celonis process mining software can be applied to a broad range of uses cases and that's where partnerships are key, said Bastian Nominacher, co-CEO of New York-based Celonis, in an interview. "You need the right partner to do this," he said.

Protiviti already has a number of customer projects in the pipeline to which the company will apply the Celonis software. Pajakowski said. The two companies also have an informal cross-referral sales relationship that he said they are in the process of formalizing.
